3 THE kEy pRINCIpLES ARE WELL UNDERSTOOD The way to lose weight is not actually a mystery. Low GI eating. Low fat foods. Small frequent meals. portion moderation. Activity & exercise. These and other scientifically-sound principles (we'll explain them all later) DO work. We know this and you probably know it too. bUT pEOpLE DO fAIL WITH WEIGHT CONTROL. IT IS TRUE. The world is fatter than ever. So many millions of people suffer and struggle in this area. but it is not because the way to lose weight is unclear. It's because we fail to do what we know we should do and need to do, to lose weight. There are many reasons and it can be quite complicated and deeply personal. Here are some common obstacles to successful weight control: • CheAtiNg. Many of us quite simply eat badly, too often. It may be a simple as "willpower" and is almost always linked to some or all of the other obstacles listed here. Do you ever cheat? • hAbits. We are all, or almost all, creatures of habit. We were brought up a certain way. We live in established routines much of the time. This can be very positive in some areas of our lives (being organised for example) but many food-related habits are far from ideal. Can you think of unhealthy food-habits that you have? • emotioNs. for many of us food is associated with comfort and stress relief and pleasure, and more. Sometimes we reward ourselves with food. Some people eat when they are bored. The difficulty for so many, is that food has become intimately intertwined with emotional and psychological "stuff" that it is no longer just about nourishment. How do you feel about food? • DelusioNs. We know that too-good-to-be-true, is. We know that fad diets and crash diets and quick-fixes are doomed to fail. We know this and we have seen it in our own lives. And yet ……. It is just so tempting to believe in these sorts of "solutions" because they promise so much, so fast, with so little effort. It's crazy – almost by definition (when you keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result, you're "crazy"). It's also so very understandable, and so very common. We have all done it. Are you kidding yourself? Why? Can you stop?
