2024 NETWORK CHOICE 18 18 2024 NETWORK CHOICE Medication What is the difference between Chronic and Acute medication? Chronic medication is medication taken for a long term condition e.g., hypertension, diabetes whereas acute medication is taken for a short term, until the medical condition is resolved e.g., flu, headache. For how long is a prescription valid? By law no prescription can be repeated for longer than 6 months. Some medication, because of the active ingredients, may not be repeated at all; a new prescription is required each time from your doctor. How much medication can I get at a time? Prescribed medication is limited to one month's supply at a time. What is Over the Counter (OTC) medication? This is medication that can be bought over the counter without a doctor's prescription. Many common medical conditions can be treated successfully with such medication. The benefit on this option is R2 014 per beneficiary per annum and is covered at 50% SEP plus a dispensing fee. It is also subject to MMAP. I have changed options and moved to Network Choice. Do I need to register my PMB CDL condition and medicines again? You will need to visit your nominated GP for a new prescription as all PMB CDL medication must be claimed on a nominated GP practice number for it to pay from the PMB CDL benefit. If you try to claim for medication on a non-nominated GP's practice number, the claim will be rejected. Remember that conditions on the Additional Chronic List are not covered on this option. CAMAF pays for treatment and medication for these chronic conditions in full, subject to: • Registration of your condition - consult the website www.camaf.co.za • Reference pricing (RP) • Use of a Designated Service Provider (DSP) or Network Pharmacy.
