4 What is hyPertension? hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. this means the heart has to work hard to pump the blood through the system. Blood pressure normally rises and falls throughout the day, but can cause health problems if it stays high for a long time. What is BlooD Pressure? it is the internal force generated in the body by the heart, to push blood through the arteries. this is necessary to get oxygenated blood to flow from the heart to the different parts of the body. What is the norMal BlooD Pressure? Blood pressure is measured in terms of millimetres of mercury. With each beat of the heart the pressure rises and then falls. the high level is called the systolic pressure, while it drops to the diastolic pressure, before it rises again with the next beat. a level which is considered "normal" blood pressure is a systolic of between 120 and 130, and a diastolic of between 60 and 85. lower levels are not necessarily abnormal.
