5 WEIGHT LOSS: pART 1 Of 5 In the introduction to this programme we outlined some key thoughts on weight control: It is possible. The method is known. people often fail for complex and mixed reasons. We asked you to give some real thought to this, and your own weight-history. Hopefully you have some ideas on what's gone wrong in the past and hopefully you do know that weight loss is possible for yOU. SETTING A TARGET you have chosen to focus on weight control for the next 10-12 weeks (at least). It's important to set yourself a target or goal. please keep in mind that most experts suggest gradual weight loss is best and so your target should be realistic – losing about 0.5 to 1.0 kg a week or so is often a good guide. your Weight loss goAl for the Next 10 Weeks is: bUT WHy DO yOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT? there Are so mANy gooD, AND A feW poor, reAsoNs to lose Weight. some gooD reAsoNs iNCluDe: • eNergy. Carrying excess weight is tiring - when you lose weight you have more energy and you just feel better. • heAlth. Losing weight improves your overall health now. your blood pressure will be lower or easier to control. Same for your blood sugar and your cholesterol. problems like back and neck pain will ease. It may be that you have specific medical problems like arthritis and your doctor has been telling about your need to lose weight. • heAlth risk. Being overweight is associated with a significant increased risk of developing major medical problems like diabetes, heart disease and stroke to name just a few. Lose weight and your risk reduces. • hAppiNess. The idea of the "jolly fat person" is nonsense and a cruel nonsense at that. It is simply untrue and in fact there is a real link between obesity and depression. Losing weight makes you feel happier and less likely to be depressed. • AppeArANCe. for many this is a key reason to lose weight and it is often closely linked to happiness. We're all for looking good but please think about the other reasons listed here too.
