11 ImPORTANT VS. URGENT These are not the same thing at all. Lots and lots of things seem urgent (need to be done quickly and in a rush) and a smaller number of things are actually important (make a big difference to your lives). The trick lies in spotting the difference. …where the idea is to understand what you spend time doing: • It becomes clear that some things are important and urgent. Work deadlines and taking the kids to school are good examples. These cannot be avoided and your approach should be to get these things done. • Some things are just urgent but not necessarily important. These may be minor chores, tasks for other people, email replies, etc. These can waste huge time and energy and your approach should be to spend less time on this sort of thing. • Some things are important but perhaps not urgent. This might include planning work tasks, developing business strategy, having quality family time. It's easy to see these things pushed aside by purely-urgent things but your approach should be to spend mORE time on purely important things. • If it is not important and not urgent, you should try not to spend time on it. Simple. So the basic idea is to invest time on important stuff! You just have to decide what that means for you, and be very careful about urgent things (they are often the enemy).
