10 hOW DO yOU COrreCTLy Use The DifferenT inhALers? pReSSuRiSed aeRoSol inhaleRS (aSThma pump) use the inhaler as follows: 1. Shake inhaler vigorously. After taking the cap off, hold the inhaler in the upright position.It is now ready for use. 2. Tilt your head back slightly. 3. Breathe out all the air in your lungs slowly. The more air that is breathed out the better the inhalation of the medicine will be. 4. Place the inhaler in the upright position in your mouth. 5. Breathe in slowly. Just after the start of the breath press the inhaler once. Breathe the medicine right down into the lungs by breathing in all the air you can. 6. Once inhaled hold your breath for between 5 to 10 seconds. This allows the medicine to settle in your airways. 7. Breathe out slowly. UsinG A spACer WiTh yOUr ChiLD A spacer is a large plastic or metal container that helps to deliver medicine to the lungs. Spacers make the inhaler easier to use and reduce the risk of side effects. A spacer has a mouthpiece at one end and a hole for the aerosol inhaler at the other. Spacers only work with an aerosol inhaler. If your child is under the age of three, or unable to use the mouthpiece, you will probably need to use a face mask as well. There are several different brands of spacer that fit different inhalers and are available at your local pharmacy including Volumatic, glaxohaler, and aeroChamber. Why SpaCeRS aRe impoRTanT: • They make aerosol inhalers easier to use and more effective • you get more medicine into your lungs than when just using the inhaler on its own • They help to reduce the possibility of side effects from the higher doses of steroid medicines by reducing the amount of medicine that is swallowed and absorbed into the body
