2 whAt iS COPD? COPD is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease of the lungs and airways. it is characterized by narrowing of the airways that leads to blockage, which causes wheezing and shortness of breath. it also causes cough with mucus, especially on waking up in the morning. COPD has also been known as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Figure A shows the location of the lungs and airways. Figure B shows lungs damaged by COPD.
