What is the difference between Chronic and Acute
medication?
Chronic medication is medication taken for a long term
condition e.g., hypertension, diabetes, whereas acute
medication is taken for a short term until the medical
condition is resolved e.g., headache, flu.
A referral from a nominated network GP is required for
acute medication for Alliance Network members.
For how long is a prescription valid?
By law no prescription can be repeated for longer than
6 months. Some medication, because of the scheduling
status (eg. schedule 6 and 7), may not be repeated at all;
a new prescription is required each time from your doctor.
How much medication can I get at a time?
Prescribed medication is limited to one month's supply at
a time.
What is Over the Counter (OTC) medication?
This is medication that can be bought over the counter
without a doctor's prescription. Many common medical
conditions can be treated successfully with such medication.
OTC is limited to R5 810 per beneficiary.
