4 SMOKinG: paRt 1 OF 5 You have decided to quit (or cut back) and you've been thinking about the hugely damaging effects of smoking. You have also come to understand that you Can stop the damage and reverse a lot of it. iF you quit. Only if you quit. It's up to you. tHiS week, let'S take a look at Smoking and you. YOU ARE A MAN You may well smoke more and stronger cigarettes than women do. You are probably worried about your health, you may be concerned about workplace impacts, and your partner may be pressurising you to quit. Your quitting plans are quite likely to rely on willpower and "going it alone" and you are probably considering fewer cigarettes rather than lighter brands. You could well be worried that alcohol is a powerful trigger for your smoking. we SuggeSt you consider quitting altogether rather cutting down. Please consider getting help with quitting (we'll explore options next week) rather than going it alone. If you plan how drinking & smoking do not have to mix, they won't. Getting support is a sign of strength! YOU ARE A WOMAN You probably smoke fewer and lighter cigarettes than men do. It's quite likely that you feel the need for cigarettes in social and other situations, partly for pleasure and partly for confidence. You know about the effects on your health but you are also quite worried about the effects on those around you. Your quitting plans are likely to involve lighter cigarettes and you do consider getting help with quitting. A big worry for you is that may gain weight when you quit. we SuggeSt you quit rather than cut down. We know how cigarettes can make you feel but it is really a false thing: confidence and relaxation can come from inside and you do not need an addictive drug to feel OK. Weight can be managed if you are careful, it really can. This is something you CAN do.
