moderaTe alcoHol consumPTIon is helpful with blood pressure control. The maximum drinks per week
(where a "drink" is a small glass of wine, a single spirit measure or a small beer) should be 21 for men and 14
for women. It's best to have at least one alcohol-free day each week. Importantly, the very slight benefits of
alcohol do NOT outweigh the real risks and so nobody should start drinking for health reasons!
sTress managemenT. Stress has long been seen as causing and or worsening High Blood Pressure, and there is
evidence of a link. Learning how to cope with stress better is good for all of us and may be especially important
as regards your blood pressure. Stress management is all about identifying what causes you stress and anxiety
and then making plans to handle things better or differently. It also involves learning relaxation techniques like
deep breathing and meditation. Exercise and active living play an important role here too.
