22 CRYO-SAVE | THE FAMILY STEM CELL BANK STEM CELL MUCH MORE THAN A CELL EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS Stem Cells are the Building Blocks of our Body. They are capable of becoming other types of Cell and Regenerate our Tissues, Organs and Functionality thanks to their two unique abilities: • Self-Renewal. • Specialization into other cell types. There are two types: Embryonic and Adult Stem Cells. Embryonic Stem Cells (ESCs) can only be collected from the Blastocyst, a preimplantation embryo that develops 5 days after fertilization. The Embryo is destroyed when they are collected and thus they are subject to ethical controversy. Use of these Stem Cells is in early stages of investigation and they aren't currently used in therapies at all, especially because they have been proven to potentially cause cancer in the patient.
