SyMPtoMS oF PuErPErAL PSYCHOSIS • Hyperactivity • Increased rate of speech • Delusions • Paranoia • Extreme confusion • Hallucinations • Extreme depression with immediate treatment, psychotic episodes usually cease in about 8 - 9 weeks. dEvELoPing dEPrESSion Slowly developing postnatal depression can take two forms. one type occurs when a patch of postnatal blues which started soon after the baby's birth becomes worse and more distressing as time passes. the second type develops more slowly and is not noticeable until several weeks after the birth of the baby. dEPrESSion during PREGNANCY the experience of pregnancy and subsequent mothering represents a transition in the life of a woman. Many women are able to cope with pregnancy through support from various resources such as prenatal classes and routine medical care. However, emotional difficulties, specifically mood changes, may be frequently encountered during pregnancy. these changes include increased irritability and sensitivity, tearfulness, insomnia, a loss of appetite, lack of motivation, anxiety attacks and crying spells. Proper treatment is important. Some of the following symptoms may be experienced: • Depressed mood/sadness • Disturbed sleep • A change in appetite • Feelings of guilt • Excessive concern for your own or your baby's health • Panic attacks with heart palpitations and shortness of breath • Recurrent obsessions or ritualistic behaviours that significantly interfere with your ability to carry out your daily activities • Thoughts of death or suicide What can happen with untreated depression: • Untreated depression may interfere with your ability to enjoy pregnancy. Early bonding with your baby may be hindered, which may lead to long term consequences for you and your baby. • Symptoms may interfere with your ability to work or carry out your daily activities. Self-care, including medical care may be neglected. • In desperation, some women may turn to alcohol and drugs, which can severely compromise the mother and the unborn child. • In severe cases, women may contemplate self-harm or even suicide to cope with their depressive symptomology.
