Although it may be very difficult to rest when you have a demanding baby and perhaps other children to care for, it does help to rest as much as possible if you are suffering from depression. you will feel worse if you are over-tired. Ask a partner or friend to care for the baby while you have a proper rest, preferably in the middle of the day. try to lie on your bed even if you do not sleep. A rest during the day often improves sleeping at night for those with sleeping difficulties. try to eat a small meal at regular intervals. Many depressed mothers forget to eat and this can make the depression symptoms feel worse. it is essential to have a well- balanced diet that prevents tiredness and feeling run down. Exercise depression often leads to exhaustion and lack of motivation. despite this, any form of physical exercise, however small, will have beneficial results. If some exercise can be done outside in the fresh air, this is even better. Remember Seeking treatment is a sign of strength, and is the first step to feeling better. don't expect too much from yourself right away. Feeling better takes time. keep your expectations realistic. Also: Answer the EPDS at the end of the booklet if you suspect that you may be developing/suffering from PND. Contraceptives Many mothers start to take oral contraceptives as soon as the doctor will let them after birth. if the mother is feeling depressed, it is advisable that she stops taking the pill as soon as possible, even if she is loath to do so. the pill can make some women feel depressed and it is seen as an aggravating factor where a woman is depressed after birth. For a woman who is suffering from depression, several methods of birth control can be used.
