They are due monthly in arrears by the 3rd day of each month; debit orders are run on the 1st and the 28th of each month. What happens if I fall into arrears with payment of my contributions? Where contributions have not been paid within 15 days of the due date, the scheme has the right to suspend membership and benefits for the period after the due date. You will be notified of the default and if not paid within a further 15 days, membership may be terminated. No benefits can be paid or authorisation for admission to hospital will be given. When does my child need to pay adult contribution rates? After the age of 21 adult rates apply from the beginning of the year in which the child turns 22. What is a late joiner penalty and when can it be applied? In terms of the Medical Schemes Act, schemes may impose a penalty on members applying for membership after the age of 35 years, where they have not been a member of a registered scheme for a period of two years or more. There is a sliding scale percentage rate (from 5 - 75%) that is added to the monthly contribution applicable to the beneficiary, which remains in place permanently. CAMAF does not impose any late joiner penalties on members that qualify for membership. BACK TO CONTENTS PAGE 7
